Hi Guys, I apologize if this note covers ground already run into the ground
here. I havent been able to read every post on the subject. The
professionals in the field of autism I interact with are expressing fear and
distress about the rush to infuse secretin into the veins of children. I am
not a physician and find myself in the position of an astonished observer who
nevertheless is involved in the lives of many of these people. There are
dangers, life threatening ones, involved with any IV administration of drugs.
When I hear about these infusions occurring in homes or in pediatricians
offices with no resuscitation equipment (or RNs and M.D.s with no
resuscitation experience) I quake with fear. The argument that because a
hormone or enzyme is naturally occurring it should be safe is so thoughtless
to me that it makes my heart sink to hear it. I am aware of many patients who
died after misuse of the naturally occurring hormone insulin. I could go on
about this but it just seems so obvious to me... I now am aware of at least
one child in my area who is experiencing new, horrible and frightening
behaviors seemingly because of secretin (the prescribing M.D. attributed it
to the treatment). The child began having extended tantrums, screaming and
crying uncontrollably and biting himself badly (all new behaviors). These
episodes are apparently characterized by seizure- like body movements and an
arching of the back. Again, not from a physician but from an observer- this
is possibly significant and noteworthy. I would like to hear from any M.D.
or Ph.D. physicians reading this list about this. And for the record, these
symptoms remind me of a genetic disorder of metabolism which can be
replicated by neuro-toxins, Lesch-Nyan Syndrome. I encourage posters to take
note of any adverse reactions to this treatment and let us all know (whether
your own experience or people with whom you are aquainted). As there is not
(and likely will not be) pertinent research addressing it, it can only serve
to inform us all if we do. By the way, it is not worth any childs life to
find out if this is a worthwhile treatment. PLEASE BE CAREFUL! And if you
dont know how to be careful, stop right now and employee other treatment
options. Phil Blevins, RN
